The First Album - The Lyrics
(Moonlight) Shake My Head And Leave
(Mason, Broughton, Thomas)
Moonlight.. . Oh in the Moonlight
Eyes bright . . . Waiting for daylight
Please, don't fight, everything's so right
High lights .. . Sweet golden goodnights.
But there you go, it goes to show, how my imagination flows.
In never ending circles, with glances asking questions
We chase each other's alibis
And if my voices show me caution,
(only through your eyes)
its only through your eyes
Nightlife ...seems like a still life
Waiting ...for unfinished paintings
oh but meanwhile ... time in between smiles
stands still .. . like some breathless windmill.
But there you go, it goes to show, how my imagination flows.
If the sages say I'm foolish. I'll say your every movement
Was like a river, washing over me.
But if you tell me that its ended, I'll shake my head and leave
(shake my head and leave).
Deadly Delicious
(Slamer, Mason)
Good God, she's deadly delicious, camper than
a holiday.
Front page, in every issue, tighter than a one act play.
Don't look, without your glasses, she'll turn you to a pillar of
salt.
Watch out, she's mean and brassy, sharper than a telephone.
Take care, she'll ask you for small things, only that you give
her the earth.
Gladly she gives you nothing for something, she only seems to
stop when it hurts.
Tell her, that England becomes her, its really more expensive
abroad.
Modest so what can you give her just a floor in Madame Tussauds.
look how, she smiles politely, harmless as a hive full of beezzz
She breaks your heart, three times nightly, when you see her
dwarf on a lead.
Don't stop, she'll have you arrested, just for looking into her
eyes.
Must be, she's chemically tested, just one glance you're into the
vice . .. Just one
glance you're into the vice ... Just one glance you're into the
vice .. .
Please ... don't leave the room.
don't leave the room, don't leave the room.
Please ... don't leave the room, don't leave the room, don't
leave the room.
Good God, she's deadly delicious, camper than s holiday.
Front page in every issue, tighter than a one act play.
Don't look, without your glasses, she turn you to a pillar of
salt.
Watch out, she's mean and brassy, sharper than a telephone.
Good God, she's deadly delicious ...
Deadly Delicious ...
Deadly Delicious ...
Surgery Hours (doctor doctor)
(Slamer, Broughton, Mason)
(The patient): Oh Doctor, Doctor, soothe my aching knee. Higher,
higher if you please
I'm sure my temperature's running so low I could freeze. Have you
got something to warm me
(And the Doctor said) I'm sure the council will admit I'm in a
fix
See my point of view for sure.
They'll say "We know its hard" then strike me off the
list.
After all its not L'amour ... I can't risk no more. During
surgery hours.
(The patient): Oh Doctor, Doctor
Oh Doctor, Doctor
Oh Doctor, Doctor. My husband works at night, And I can't sleep
without the light
You see it gets so dark it worries me sometimes. I get this
aching in my side.
(And the Doctor said) I'm sure an aspirin will satisfy your
needs.
For who knows where a massage leads.
Your insomnia kept me awake last week
Your Doctor diagnoses greed, greed, greed, greed. I can't risk no
more.
During surgery hours.
Oh Doctor, Doctor.
Oh Doctor, Doctor.
Oh Doctor, Doctor, soothe my aching knee, higher, higher, if you
please.
I'm sure my temperature's running so low I could freeze
Have you got something to warm ... me
Oh Doctor, Doctor
Oh Doctor, Doctor (etc)
Sunset Boulevard
(Mason, Broughton, Thomas)
No... No golden mile
Or flashing cameras, the ritzy style
Just ... just scrap book smiles.
There's no need to hurry, when all she has is time
She, she, she, she's going home
Between the pagodas and always alone
Down on Sunset Boulevard, you'd sell your
soul before your car is paid for.
The only laughing sound you hear, from blind men cause they hold
no fear of darkness
With every flashing theatre light, a startled welcome through the
night is glowing.
But every mother's son is dead, they choked upon the daily bread
they prayed for.
Friends... friends pass on by.
She gives a performance, they call it a lie.
Only ... only late at night.
She still sees the traces of the city lights
Sun
Sun ... Sun ... Sunset Boulevard,
the devil can take her, she's been there before
By the broken ballistrade, an idol from another age is swaying
Softly singing Gershwin songs, but every other note is wrong and
straining.
And once again her glass is dry, the bedroom mirror cannot lie
forever
For down on Sunset Boulevard they've lived too long and laughed
too hard to love her
The telephone is ringing ... but there's no
reply
A gramophone is singing ... sweetly out of time.
And in the hall, screaming for the final scene ...
Passing through their eyes, peering for the view.
With her name in lights, The lady's news.
And in her sleep they call her... loving every smile
Lining every street to see her . . . starry
eyed and wild.
Again she wakes, screaming for the final scene.
Passing through their eyes, peering for the view.
With her name in lights, The lady's news.
Oddball Dance
(Slamer, Mason, Dunn, Thomas)
The doctor said that a week in bed would certainly do the trick
But I knew from the start that it wasn't my heart, it was my head
that was making me sick
Well I got so bored, taking trips abroad to improve the condition
I had.
Just sitting at home like a sackful of bones, while my neighbours
thought me utterly mad
I took to L.S.D. I wrote to magazines. The kind they sell you
with one eye on the door
But I'd like to endorse the lonely hoofers course That really
showed me what dancing is for
I was first to arrive, kinda nervous and shy, when the atmosphere
put me at ease.
It was cozy and warm, like the day I was born, with the smell of
burning joss on the breeze
I first got my chance at the Oddball Dance
... The thrill of romance
At the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance
I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance . . . The thrill of
romance.
At the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance.
I was kinda surprised 'cause I'm a regular
guy, used to sitting in a room full of squares
I was quick to surmise I was watching two guys who were really
taking off on the stairs
The music was hard, a little avant-garde, I had to keep my ear to
the ground
And I had to remark on the poster of Marx someone used as a roach
in the lounge
There was the heavy brigade, complete with beret and shades.
I really thought that they were putting me on
But I turned around to find a thousand rounds of ammunition lying
there in the john
I left the room to find solitude and to contemplate the meaning
of time.
But when I returned I got mg fingers burned, can you lend me the
bread for the fine?
I first got my chance, at the Oddball
Dance,... The thrill of romance
At the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance.
I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance,... The thrill of
romance
At the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance, the Oddball Dance.
I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance.
The Oddball Rag.
I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance
...
I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance ...
I first got my chance, at the Oddball Dance . .. The thrill of
romance
At the Oddball Dance, The Oddball Dance, The Oddball Dance.
Dance.
5000 Years / Don't Know Can't Tell
(Broughton, Mason)
Our carpets are worn and all our curtains
torn.
But the mood carries on, and on and on beyond, till it's gone.
It seems like five thousand years have come and gone
And still it's left undone.
In circles and space, the vast inhuman race
The strain will show, when empty breezes blow, going no place.
It seems like five thousand years have come and gone
And still it's left undone.
The changes in time will steal your youth and
mine
With shaking heads, we lie in unmade beds, counting the nights.
It seems like five thousand years have come and gone
And still it's left undone.
Will you let me in? I'm just a long lost
friend.
You can't tell these days just what a man intends.
Is it day? Or is it night?
I don't know. Can't tell. I don't know.
But you reap what you sow, that's how it goes
We made the bed and look where it led
Is it where we wanted to go?
Well who's to know.
The jackal and the fox, won't spoil your window box
Who needs a world outside? Your T.V.'s twice as wide.
Is it day? Or is it night?
I don't know. Can't tell. I don't know.
But you reap what you sow, that's how it
goes.
We made the bed and look where it's led.
Is it where we wanted to go, well who's to know
Who's to know, who's to know, who's to know ... ?
No one dares to walk along the boulevard
In case they catch you off your guard
When the lights are off and there is no one there
Then they catch you unawares.
Nervousness is showing in the whites of your eyes
Suspicious of the other guy
Talking is a luxury that you can't afford
When everybody's paranoid.
It seems like five thousand years have come
and gone (Rep. x 3)
It seems like five thousand years have come and gone.
And still it's left undone.
The Hap-ki-do Kid
(Mason, Thomas)
I heard that you get tougher with every reel
The kids say you got fingers made of steel
They say your belt gets blacker by the hour
I know you like your victims sweet and sour.
Watch out ... He don't need no pistol in his
hand
Watch out ...With so much bread and twice as many fans.
Watch out ... He scowls at you and then he chops you down
Watch out ... He's the seventh son of the holy seventh Dan.
Hap - Ki - Do, Hap - Ki - Do . . .
(He ... He's the kid, here he comes)
So you embrace the beauty and the beast
A wisdom given to you from the East.
And there your masters taught you where it's at
The noble art of breaking someone's back.
Watch out ... He don't need no pistol in his
hand
Watch out ... With so much bread and twice as many fans.
Watch out ... He scowls at you and then he chops you down
Watch out .., He's the seventh son of the holy seventh Dan.
Hap - Ki - Do, Hap - Ki - Do ...
(He ... He's the kid, here he comes)
Hap - Ki - Do . .. Here he comes ... Watch out ...
The Greatest Story Ever Told
(Broughton, Thomas)
The scant applause and bar room bores had
left him crying.
But in his dreams, they kissed him clean, he heard them sighing.
Woke up to a woman's touch and lying by his side
She offered him the whole world's eyes ...
Tomorrow... You'll be the greatest story ever told.
Around her neck, was draped a snake, she held
him to her
And on her arm, a silver charm, with Roman numbers
He saw an eye gleaming like a cool and breathing icy cold
She gave her hand and took his soul
Tomorrow ... He'd be the greatest story ever told.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow . .. You'll be the greatest story ever to)d.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow ... You'll be the greatest story ever told.
Banners bear your name, you'll tee the whole
world change
But it just don't matter today, the fires are far away.
You'll be the greatest story ever told.
She winked her eye, and smiled a smile, that left him chilly.
The price of fame was all she claimed and he was willing.
Now it never rains where he entertains and there's a cooling
breeze.
The fires burn eternally... With no ... Tomorrow. He's still the
greatest story ever told.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, you'll be the greatest story ever told.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, you'll be the greatest story ever told.
Banners bear your name, you'll see the whole
change
But it just don't matter today, the fires are far away,
you'll be the greatest story ever told.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, you'll be the greatest story ever told (Rep.
etc).
Haymaking Time
(Mason, Broughton)
The first thing I saw was the sun on your
skin.
Dew on the doorstep, the milk to take in to the house.
A mouse running rafters, the cat running after, to catch him a
playmate.
They tell me it's Haymaking Time again.
The next thing I knew we were sitting apart
You in pajamas and me with my heart on your sleeve.
Don't go, leave the day spoiled, wait till the egg's boiled,
what's in a moment.
Indulging in sentimentality.
You know it's not right, to make a song and dance over night.
You know it's not right, but you do it anyhow.
It's not very bright, to turn it on as you turn out the light.
It's not very bright, but you do it anyhow.
Memories shelter in days such as these
Love still remembered in visions you cast with the breeze
Wax on the candle, sand in your sandals, they weather the seasons
Who cares about reasoning anyway.
You know it's not right, to make a song and dance over night.
You know it's not right, but you do it anyhow.
It's not very bright, to turn it on as you turn out the light.
It's not very bright, but you do it anyhow.
